Does it feel like you are alone in dealing with the pressures of school and relationships? Do you see friends on Instagram or Facebook and compare how you feel on the inside to how gleaming and shiny and perfect their lives look like on the outside. Does it seem like the world expects you to handle everything it throws at you perfectly and do it with a smile while posting a blog about how effortlessly you do it? I get it. We all need a place to unpack what it is we are doing here and discover what kind of life we want to live and how to get there.
Here’s a secret: we are all struggling here. It’s the whole “being human” thing. We are not going to be able to leapfrog over it, no matter how many detox cleanses and hot yoga classes and 30-day boot camps we do. We cannot rid ourselves of pain by painstakingly “curating” the images we present.
I believe strongly in the healing and rejuvenating power of the therapeutic process. In my experience, the power of inviting a creative, empathetic partner to witness and share our stories and perspective creates a sacred space. There we can begin to co-create new experiences and new meaning. Here is a remarkable paradox: the more deeply we can accept and delve into who we are without judgment, the more power we have to change. When we have a coherent narrative about where we come from, we finally begin to have a choice about where we are going.
